Canine Companions Bring Independence to the Disabled

Listen NOW…

CCIKendra Bushong, National Marketing Coordinator, Canine Companions for Independence joins hosts Lisa Gorman and Scott Sheppard to share some of the great things their non-profit organization does by training assistance dogs that help people with disabilities live more independently. Kendra explains the types of service dogs and some background about how they teach these specially bred dogs to perform over 40 commands including picking up objects, opening doors, pushing buttons, and notifying the hearing impaired on various sound related tasks like if the food in their microwave is done cooking.

Kendra also describes what types are best suited for becoming a service dog. Some of the dogs are assigned to even work as facility dogs helping patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and other stressful environments feel better. These dogs are exceptional in every aspect and bring incredible joy to their handlers and special people to whom they are assigned.

Emily Williams, National Board Member & Volunteer, Canine Companions for Independence chats with Lisa and Scott about what is involved in the process of training such a dog, all the way from time the puppy is born till it is placed with a human companion. Emily has been volunteering since 1989, raising 29 litters of puppies. She shares her experiences as a breeder and some of the methods she uses to train the young dogs in real world situations such as in stores and restaurants. Emily also shares anecdotes about the special bond these dogs form with their companions and how rewarding it can be to watch a young pup find it’s final home.
